How to Download Windows Software

By breaking the download process into a few simple steps, this information will help you understand and feel comfortable with the process.

The process of getting the software from Copernicus Software to your computer is pretty standard – try it once and your next download will be a breeze. Start the download process by choosing which screen saver you want. For this tutorial we will illustrate how to download The Alaska Experience Screen Saver for Windows 95/98/NT/2000.

How can I tell how long it will take to download my screen saver?

Download time depends on a few factors: your Internet connection speed (including your modem's speed and the time of day), your computer's speed, and other factors that affect download times. Our screen saver files are typically 6 to 14 MB in size.

Here's a guide to approximate download times:

File Size/Internet Speed 28.8 Kbps 56 Kbps T1/LAN
1 MB 5.5 minutes 3 minutes 7 seconds
10 MB 56 minutes 28 minutes 1.2 minutes

Seven-Step Download Process for Windows 95/98/NT/2000:
(We also have download instructions for Macintosh.)

Select the software you wish to purchase

·        Follow the order instructions in the check out process

·        Download it to your computer

·        Locate downloaded file on your hard drive

·        Start (run) the program

·        After you're finished - what to do with the original download file

 1. Select the Screen Saver you wish to purchase

  • Go to the describing the screen saver title you wish to purchase
  • Click on the order button for the Windows Download version of the screen saver

 2. Complete the order process

  • Follow the order instructions including selection of payment method.
  • For Shipping Method choose Download.

 3. Download it to your computer

  • When you have completed your order you will see an order confirmation page with all of your order information completed.
  •  On the left side of this page you will see a red Download button. Click on this button to begin the download process.
  •  In the File Download program the prompt will ask you if you want to “save this program to disk?” Click OK to continue.

Download the file to a place on your computer’s hard drive where you can easily locate it, such as your Desktop, or a file folder for download files. Click save on the Window below to begin the download process.

Note that the download progress dialog displays the estimated time to complete the download, and reminds you where on your computer’s hard drive the file is being downloaded. During the download process you can continue using your computer, working in other windows, including your Internet browser. When the download process is complete the download progress window will display "Download Complete". Click the Close button to close the download progress dialog. (If the box beside "Close this dialog box when download completes" was checked, the window will close automatically.)

4. Locate downloaded file on your hard drive

Assuming you saved the download file to your Desktop or to a folder used for downloads, it should be easy to locate. Download files are often compressed in size to speed up their download time and to combine several files into one package. Usually, after downloading, the file needs to be "decompressed" or "extracted" before you can use it. Your new screen saver is "self-extracting", which means that you don't need to do anything except start the process. You do this by clicking on the downloaded file.

5. Start (run) the program

The Self Extractor starts the installation process by converting the original download file (AE.exe) into your screen saver program (Alaska Experience Screen Saver in this example) By opening the AE.exe file you are activating the screen saver installation process. The installer recommends a place to install the program and brings you to the Screen Saver Set Up Window.

When you install the screen saver, a shortcut is automatically installed on your desktop for easy access to your screen saver settings. You will also find access to your screen saver through the Windows Program Group, and in your Windows Explorer under C:\Copern32. Once you access the screen saver you can customize the settings to your own specifications. The screen saver installation process is now complete!

6. After you're finished move the downloaded file to a storage disk, or delete the file.

Once you have downloaded and successfully installed your screen saver file, you may wish to keep in on a zip drive or another hard drive as a backup in case you decide to change computers or something happens to your main hard drive. Or, you can delete the original download "installation" file which is no longer needed to run your program.

Either...

Delete the downloaded file

·        Locate the "AE.exe" download file (likely on your Desktop). Right-click the "AE.exe" filename, then left-click Delete. Click Yes to confirm you want it moved to the Recycle Bin. When you delete the downloaded file from your hard drive, if you need to install it again you’ll have to return to the order confirmation screen and start the download process over again. .

Or...

Store the downloaded file elsewhere

·        Keep the downloaded file in a safe place so you can install the program on your hard drive again at a later date.

·        Locate the "AE.exe" download file and move it to a backup disk (another hard drive, Zip Drive, etc.), or to a folder on your hard drive you created for storing downloaded installer files (e.g. C:\downloaded files).

Troubleshooting:

My download didn't work; what do I do?

Downloading software can "not work" for a number of reasons:

·        The download process is interrupted because you lost your Internet connection (e.g. someone picked up an extension telephone, or your Internet Service Provider (ISP) disconnected you);

·        You didn't note where on your hard drive the downloaded file was being saved, and as a consequence can't find it or don't know what to look for (download files often have obscure filenames which aren't obvious or related to the name of the product you downloaded).

To Re-install your screen saver

If your download was interrupted or you need to load it on a different computer (you are allowed to load on 2 PC's), you can reaccess your order confirmation page.

To reinitiate the download process:

Return to Yahoo Shopping at
http://order.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/wg-carts
and click on the ORDER STATUS line in the middle of your screen.

If your order does not show up listed in the upper half of the page then put your order ID in the ORDER SEARCH box on the middle-left of the screen.

The order ID is in the format copernicus-software-XXXX, where XXXX is your order number. You will then be prompted to enter the same credit card number you used on your initial order. After you input the number (you will not be charged again) you can then download the screen saver by clicking on the DOWNLOAD button.
If you need additional assistance you can contact our technical support department. Click Here or you can call us between 10AM and 5PM Pacific time at 800-368-6231.

When you use the download method to purchase your screen saver from Copernicus Software, the software is delivered electronically, over the Internet, to your computer's hard drive. There is no software box, no plastic wrap, no cardboard packaging, and no CD-ROM or diskettes. The cost savings otherwise associated with the production of packaging materials is passed on to you - usually this means box-less software is cheaper to buy, and there is no need to pay for shipping.
